Archive-name: graphics/comp-graphics Posting-Frequency: monthly Last-modified: 2 march 2005 Version: 2.07 URL: http://www.wrhine.com/faq/faqabcg.php This is the only known FAQ for alt.binaries.comp-graphics Usenet Newsgroup. This astounding document would not exist except for the generous help and assistance from the members of a.b.c-g. Any and all additions & corrections should be directed to me, J. Wayne Rhine All contributors/correctors will be acknowledged at the bottom of this FAQ. If I missed you let me know As Soon As Possible so I can correct my error. I am attempting to create a Computer Graphics reference source. I am hoping to keep this as a list of computer graphics and related programs. Also a list of other newsgroups dedicated to a graphics program and any information about that newsgroups FAQ. This is all with an emphasis towards programs and info gathered from the a.b.c-g newsgroup. IMPORTANT: This list does not imply a recommendation for and about any single Software company and/or their products by the author of this FAQ. If you are desperate for any specific recommendations, ask the newsgroup nicely. This list is just that, a list. J. Wayne Rhine a.b.c-g FAQ maintainer http://www.wrhine.com/faq/ a.b.c-g FAQ Alt.Binaries.Comp-Graphics Usenet Newsgroup a.b.c-g FAQ Alt.Binaries.Comp-Graphics Usenet Newsgroup Version: 2.07 Index 1. What is this Usenet group all about? The alt.binaries.comp-graphics "abc-g" group has three main functions at present. Share computer generated graphics WeekEnd Theme Midweek Challenge a) A place to post computer graphics. All graphic types of images are posted from 3D to animation. A note as to software used and explanation of techniques is encouraged but is not necessary. The posters to this group range from beginning hobbyist to commercial artists, all of whom are interested in improving their techniques and sharing their art works. By sharing our knowledge and art we promote exposure to cutting edge graphic art, encourage creative experimentation and increase knowledge. Any discussions related to the posted graphics or general news pertaining to computer graphics is permissible. b) The weekly WET or Week End Theme. A new image is posted weekly and anyone interested can generate a graphic from the images and post it to the group. WET posters are requested to include the word "WET" in the subject line of their post. On Tuesday of each week, the previous WET picker will announce the next picker who has agreed to supply the new WET. **NOTE: A WET picker schedule is located here http://www.wrhine.com/faq/wetcalendar.html . This facilitates the smooth transfer of WET picker from week to week. This schedule can be found periodically in the a.b.c-g newsgroup. If you wish to be added to the schedule, post to the newsgroup or contact J. Wayne Rhine directly. The selected picker will supply the group with the source image(s) for the next WET, making it/them available in JPEG format. When multiple objects are provided, they should not overlap on the JPEG, so that people can, if they choose, work from the JPEG file. Multiple images are not required for the WET. The picker should take into consideration that some WET participants prefer working with a single image and that others may find more than 4 images overwhelming. If too many images are provided, the "Theme" in WeekEnd Theme gets lost in the shuffle. We may no longer see how different artists create unique works from the same image(s). Multiple objects may be related or unrelated as the picker chooses. The JPEG file is to be posted to the alt.binaries.comp-graphics newsgroup sometime on Thursday. When possible, multiple images should be provided as layered PSD and PSP format files. If the picker cannot save files to one or more of these formats, there are plenty of helpful people who would be happy to reformat the file. If the picker does not have access to a web site, these same helpful people will assist in finding a home for the WET image files where they may be downloaded by the anxious WETters. Close cutting of objects is not required. If the picker feels comfortable in cutting out the individual objects, that is fine, but he or she should not feel compelled to trim them. Some thought can be given to seasonal themes, such as spooky items close to Halloween, but the ultimate choice is that of the picker. It should also be remembered that the WET artists are a diverse, international group, so that holidays specific to one country or religion may not be celebrated by other WET participants. (For example, people in Botswana rarely celebrate the Prince of Luxembourg's birthday). Images chosen for the WET should be free of royalty or copyright restrictions. Originated by Nightingail and Tika Carr, MidC is a non-structured "activity" designed to fill the gap between the successive Week End Themes. Instead of an image, an idea is given each Monday or Tuesday. Participants' images are posted to alt.binaries.comp-graphics until the next WET on Thursday. How does MidC work? Each week the WET picker chooses an idea and posts it to the newsgroup alt.binaries.comp-graphics . Each artist interprets the idea in an image of their own creation. The original idea is posted on Monday or Tuesday of each week. The earlier on those days it is posted the better (but *please* do not post before Monday), so we don't diminish the WET's time frame. Once the idea is posted, everyone goes to work -- the MidC entries are posted in alt.binaries.comp-graphics or posted on web pages, and everyone enjoys. Once the MidC is over, the next chooser-of-the-image posts the next WET on Thursday followed by the next MidC on Monday. e) General Notes: New posters should not be discouraged by the quantity of posting in response to their posts. The numerous core members participate in the WET's and it is a great method of introducing yourself to the group because of the amount of interaction with other members of the group. New posters must realize that most members have been commenting on each other's graphics for a long time and on a regular basis. It has been requested that posters include in the subject line a description of the graphic. This is a brief FAQ to allow a reader/member of the group to know how the group functions at the present time. The existence of an official FAQ is unknown.
